Storytimes

Storytimes are offered Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Baby lapsits are for children 0-18 months old and their parents/caregivers. Toddler storytimes are for children 2-3 years old and their parents/caregivers. Preschool storytimes are for children 3-5 years old and their parents/caregivers. Family storytimes are for families of all ages.

Based off of recommendations from author Penny Peck (2014) storytimes are “25-30 minutes” long with “Songs and books” at the Hamby-Burns Library (p.52). The Hamby-Burns Library believes strongly in offering storytimes that best support early literacy education. The library and staff use author Peck’s (2014) book Crash Course in Children’s Services as guide to formatting our storytimes and library programs.

The Baby Lapsit is for children 0-18 months old and their parents/caregivers. This is a great time for young children to learn early literacy skills through talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. This positive and welcoming environment nurtures your baby’s language skills and love for books through fun activities.  There are two different baby lapsit times posted below to accommodate different schedules and naptimes (Peck, 2014); both programs are the same. Please join us for Baby Lapsits in the purple children’s room on the first floor of the library.

Toddler Storytime is for children 2-3 years old and their parents/guardians. Toddler Storytime is a great way to make sure your child is preschool ready! This means focusing on early literacy skills through talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. Toddler Storytime integrates the use of fingerplay, songs, and rhyming. Toddler Storytime teaches new words and helps young children with word recognition.  There are two different Toddler Storytimes posted below to accommodate different schedules and naptimes (Peck, 2014); both programs are the same.  Please join us for Toddler Storytime in the orange children’s room on the first floor of the library.

Preschool Storytime is for children 3-5 years old and their parents/guardians. This program is meant to focus on developing early literacy skills and getting preschoolers ready for kindergarten! That means more interactive activities and stories that promote mental growth. This storytime features longer books versus reading multiple short books in order to develop print motivation and print awareness. There will be discussions after each story to provide your child with narrative skills. There are two different Toddler Storytimes posted below to accommodate different schedules and naptimes (Peck, 2014); both programs are the same. Preschool Storytime will take place in the blue children’s room on the first floor of the library. Please grab a hula-hoop at the front door to act as a seat marker during this storytime. We will also be hula-hooping during some of our get up and move songs.
