Summary & Conclusion
Creating a year-long calendar program for a Children’s Library is a daunting task at first glance, but breaking it down into chunks - storytime, summer reading program, special programs, etc. - helps to add a sense of focus to the process. As the year progresses, taking time after each program to evaluate and allow for change in order to better meet the needs of the community is important. As this is a new library, the staff of Hamby-Burns wants to make sure that we meet those needs and when a program seems ill-fitting for the community, it’s important to find out why and fix it. We are not, after all, here for our own interests, but the interests of those we serve.
Our goal, as we serve the community, is to foster a love of reading in the process of becoming better readers. We believe our focus on Early Literacy Training and Storytimes will meet that goal. Our Summer Reading Program and our Winter Bingo Reading Program support that goal with the added element of fun and competition. Our Special Events focus on developing curiosity of the world around us and will, at their best, encourage those who attend to learn more through the written word.
