Early Literacy Training

 

The first Monday of every month we offer trainings for parents/guardians based on one of the six early literacy skills. These trainings will teach parents/guardians about early literacy skills and how they are implemented into songs, storytimes, fingerplays, activities, and crafts. These literacy skills according to Saroj Nadkarni Ghoting and Pamela Martin-Díaz (2006) are print motivation, phonological awareness, vocabulary, narrative skills, print awareness, and letter knowledge.  Ghoting and Martin-Diaz (2006) describe the six literacy skills below (p. 4):

1. Print motivation – a child’s interest in and enjoyment of books

 

2. Phonological awareness – the ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words

 

3. Vocabulary – knowing the names of things

 

4. Narrative skills – noticing print, knowing how to handle a book, and understanding how to follow the written word on a page

5. Print awareness – noticing print, knowing how to handle a book, and understanding how to follow the written words on a page

 

6. Letter knowledge – knowing that letters are different from each other, that the same letter can look different, and that each letter has a name and is related to sounds.

The Hamby-Burns Library focuses on implementing these six literacy skills into all our storytimes, lapsits, programs, and events. Each parent will get a certificate for completing each early literacy training. Join us in the conference 201 on the second floor right next to the stairs.

Each class is limited to 15 children plus parents/guardians - so register right way!

 

All events are free! Register online or at the library’s front desk! Sign-ups are posted every Saturday.

Budget Total, per month:  $35-$45

Note: not every training will require budget needs; where possible materials will be reused
